If you've spent any time on the internet you already know what Rule 34 is. And if you know what Rule 34 is, you've probably ended up on rule34.xxx at some point whether you meant to or not. This is the largest Rule 34 booru operating right now — 445 million monthly visits, which puts it ahead of Pornhub in some months. Fourteen years of community-uploaded content. Every franchise, every character, every art style from quick sketches to full SFM animations.

Let me get the privacy scan out of the way because this one surprised me.

Blacklight: 0 trackers. 0 third-party cookies. No fingerprinting. No session recording. No keystroke capture. No Facebook Pixel. No TikTok Pixel. No Google remarketing. On a site that pulls 445 million visits a month and monetizes entirely through advertising. I had to run the scan twice because I didn't believe it. The average site loads seven trackers. Pornhub loads two. Fansly loads six trackers and six cookies. Rule34.xxx loads zero of both. For a free ad-supported site at this scale, that's the cleanest result I've recorded.

VirusTotal: 1/95. One vendor flagged it, community score 83. Not perfect — Chaturbate and Clips4Sale both came back 0/94. The single flag is almost certainly tied to the ad network rather than the site itself. I wouldn't lose sleep over it but I'm noting it because I note everything.

The content is what keeps 445 million people coming back. Rule34.xxx is a booru — a tag-based image archive where the community uploads everything and tags it. Images, GIFs, webm animations, SFM renders, short video clips. The tag system is where the actual utility lives. You can search by character name, franchise, artist, content type, rating, and combine tags with boolean operators. Want a specific character from a specific game drawn by a specific artist? You can find it if it exists. The search precision on a booru beats anything a tube site offers because the tagging is granular in a way that categories and titles never are.

Quality varies the way you'd expect on a platform where anyone can upload. Professional digital art next to rough sketches next to AI-generated renders. The community handles some curation through favorites and scoring but there's no enforced quality floor. You're browsing through volume and filtering for what you like. If you've used Gelbooru or Danbooru, you know how this works. If you haven't — imagine a library where everything is filed meticulously by subject but nobody checks whether the books are well-written before shelving them.

Account creation is free and doesn't require an email address. Username and password. That's it. Without an account you can browse and search everything. With one you get uploads, tag editing, comments, tag blacklisting, and follows. No premium. No credits. No tokens. No tipping. The site makes money from ads and nothing else, which means the user experience is the same whether you're a first-time visitor or someone who's been uploading for a decade.

Now the ads. This is where the free lunch gets expensive in a different currency. I visited without an adblocker first and counted three tab redirects in under a minute. Popups that spawn behind the current window. Overlay ads that intercept your first click on the page. Full-page redirects to cam site signups. On mobile it's worse — tap the wrong pixel and you're somewhere else entirely. I eventually turned my adblocker on and the site became genuinely pleasant to use, which tells you that the core product works fine underneath the advertising layer. But reviewing the default experience without an adblocker, the ads are among the most aggressive I've tested. Worse than nHentai. Comparable to the free tubes at their worst.

Design is functional booru standard. Grid of thumbnails, tag sidebar, pagination. It hasn't been redesigned recently and it doesn't need to be — booru interfaces are about information density and search, not visual polish. Everything loads fast, which I attribute to Cloudflare CDN doing the heavy lifting on 445 million monthly requests. The site doesn't crash, doesn't lag, doesn't time out. At this traffic volume that's an infrastructure achievement even if the frontend looks like 2015.

There's a public API (Danbooru-style) that third-party apps and tools use. Gallery-dl works with it. Various booru browser apps work with it. If you want to interact with the archive programmatically rather than through the web interface, you can. Not many sites in this project offer that.

Moderation is more active than the anonymous operation would suggest. Underage content gets hard bans — loli and shota tags are prohibited and enforced. DMCA requests go to dmca@booru.org and based on what I've seen in community discussions, they comply. Reports for illegal content get actioned. The mod team runs tight on the stuff that matters even if the comment sections can get chaotic.

The anonymous operation. Domain registered through NameCheap with privacy protection. Staff use @booru.org email addresses. No company name. No About page with corporate details. No LLC filing I could find. Individual moderators are known by username in the community — Kielan gets mentioned a lot — but there's no public corporate identity. Fourteen years of continuous operation without a major breach or shutdown carries weight. I'd still prefer knowing who's running a site that serves half a billion monthly visits. That's a trust gap that longevity narrows but doesn't close.

The competitor landscape is Gelbooru, Danbooru, rule34.paheal.net. Paheal is the closest direct competitor — same concept, same content type, but smaller at maybe 20-30 million monthly visits. Gelbooru is comparable in size. Danbooru runs stricter quality control and moderation. Rule34.xxx wins on raw volume and traffic. Whether that matters depends on whether you value breadth of content or curation quality.

7.2 out of 10. The privacy scan is exceptional — genuinely one of the best in this project, which is wild for a free ad-supported site at this traffic level. The content archive is unmatched in the Rule 34 space. Completely free with no monetization pressure on users beyond the ads. Those ads are the problem, and they're a real one. Without an adblocker this site is hostile. With one it's arguably the best booru on the internet. That gap between the two experiences is why this isn't scoring higher.
