1.4 million characters. I want to make sure that number lands because it changes how you think about every other platform in this category. Candy AI has maybe a hundred pre-made characters that their team built. PromptChan has a community gallery of images. Character.AI probably has the closest thing to a large character library but they censor everything. JanitorAI has 1.4 million bots that users created and shared publicly, uncensored by default, and the count goes up every day. It's not even close.

The way it works is straightforward. You pick a character or build one from scratch — personality, appearance, backstory, the whole thing. Then you chat. The AI responds in character and stays in character. It's text-based roleplay, no images, no voice, no video. Just conversation. And for what it does, the conversation quality depends entirely on which LLM is running behind it.

That's where BYOM comes in and that's probably JanitorAI's actual killer feature. Bring Your Own Model. You can use JanitorAI's built-in model — JanitorLLM, which is in beta and decent but not great — or you can plug in your own API key. OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, whatever. You can run a reverse proxy through OpenRouter or a custom setup. I haven't seen another platform in this category that lets you do this. Candy AI uses their own model and that's it. PromptChan uses their own model and that's it. CrushOn uses their own model and that's it. JanitorAI says "use ours or bring something better" and that flexibility is massive because it means your experience isn't locked to one company's AI quality.

The practical impact: if you have a Claude API key sitting around, you can use it through JanitorAI's interface with their character library. The conversation quality jumps dramatically compared to JanitorLLM. The trade-off is cost — you're paying for API tokens on top of whatever JanitorAI charges, or instead of what they charge if you skip Pro. But the option exists and nobody else is offering it.

Free tier gives you 40 messages per day on JanitorLLM. That sounds reasonable until you're ten minutes into a roleplay and you've burned through half of them. Forty messages in a back-and-forth conversation is maybe twenty exchanges. That's not a session, that's a warm-up. Pro costs $9.99 a month or $99 a year and bumps you to 2,000 messages per day which is actually generous — I can't imagine anyone hitting that in a single day. The pricing is fair for Pro. The free tier is more of a demo.

Compared to Candy AI at thirteen bucks a month where you burn through 100 tokens in three days generating images, JanitorAI's Pro at ten bucks with 2,000 daily messages is objectively better value if what you want is conversation. Different product though — Candy AI generates images, has voice calls, does video. JanitorAI does text and only text. If visuals matter to you at all, JanitorAI isn't even in the conversation.

However it works, the apps exist and they function.

BYOM means you're not stuck with one model's quality ceiling. The privacy scan is clean. The company is identified. Mobile apps exist on both stores. Pro at ten bucks for 2,000 daily messages is fair. What it doesn't do is generate images, voice, or video — and if that's what you're after, Candy AI does all three. But for pure AI roleplay conversation with an uncensored community-driven platform, nothing else is in the same league.
