I went into Candy AI expecting another janky chatbot with bad grammar and blurry images. What I got instead was... actually impressive? And then expensive. And then I had to sit down and figure out where my money went. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

I signed up on a Wednesday evening, used the free tier for about ten minutes before hitting every wall they have (five messages a day, images are blurred, no NSFW), then paid the thirteen bucks for monthly. Spent the next six days testing chat, image generation, voice calls, and the custom character builder. And I created way too many characters. Long story.

## Features Breakdown

The core of Candy AI is the chat. You pick a character — they've got over a hundred pre-made ones, realistic and anime — or you build your own from scratch. The character builder is deep. Ethnicity, body type, hair, personality traits, hobbies, voice style, the whole thing. I spent like forty minutes on my first custom character tweaking stuff that probably doesn't matter but I couldn't stop.

The conversations are actually good. Not "good for a chatbot" good, like genuinely engaging sometimes. The AI picks up on your style and adapts over time. It remembers stuff from earlier in the conversation which sounds basic but most of these apps can't do that. I mentioned I was tired in one chat and three messages later she brought it up again and suggested we "do something relaxing." That felt weirdly real.

But — and this is a real but — the memory has limits. Long threads start breaking down. The AI loses track of things you said fifty messages ago. One reviewer on Trustpilot said it's like talking to "someone with short term memory loss" and honestly that's not wrong for long sessions. It's great for short conversations though.

NSFW is the main draw obviously. It's uncensored by default on premium. The roleplay goes pretty far and the AI stays in character which is more than I can say for most competitors. They added a Story Mode in 2026 that generates images to match what's happening in your roleplay. That's actually cool — you're chatting about a scene and it creates a visual to go with it. Didn't expect that level of integration.

Image generation is solid. You can request images mid-chat or use a dedicated image creator with full control — pose, outfit, setting, style. Quality is high, realistic stuff looks realistic, anime looks like anime. But each image costs 2 tokens. And that adds up. I generated maybe forty images in my first week and burned through my monthly allocation in like three days. (I should have planned better, whatever.)

Voice messages and calls exist. The voices are decent — not amazing, not terrible. Better than Siri, worse than a human. Calls eat tokens at 0.2 per message or something like that, so a twenty minute conversation costs you a noticeable chunk.

Video generation is technically available but honestly it's still rough. Short clips, inconsistent quality. They advertise it heavy but it's not the reason to use this app.

## Pricing Deep Dive

This is where Candy AI gets complicated and where most people get frustrated.

The subscription is simple enough. Thirteen bucks a month, or you can do quarterly at about ten a month, or annual at six bucks a month which is actually a good deal. Annual comes out to about seventy-two dollars for the year. Every plan gives you the same features plus 100 tokens per month.

100 tokens sounds like a lot until you realize an image costs 2 tokens, a voice message costs tokens, custom character creation costs tokens, video costs tokens. If you're using the app like they show in the ads — chatting, generating images, making calls — those 100 tokens last maybe a week. Maybe less.

Then you're buying extra token packs. Ten bucks for 100 tokens, thirty-five for 500, all the way up to three hundred dollars for 3750. I talked to people on the Discord who said they spend fifty to a hundred a month on tokens on top of their subscription. That turns a six dollar per month app into a sixty dollar per month habit.

And here's the thing that really bugs me — you can't cancel your subscription without losing access immediately. Most services let you cancel and keep access until your billing period ends. Not Candy AI. You cancel, you're out. That Trustpilot review that called it "the FIFA Ultimate Team of Chat AI" was honestly pretty accurate.

The good news on billing — it shows up as "EverAI" on your statement. Not "Candy AI," not "AI Girlfriend," just EverAI. That's about as discreet as you can get without using crypto. And yeah, they accept crypto through Coingate if you want to be extra careful.

## How It Compares

Against Promptchan — totally different products honestly. Promptchan is an image factory. You type a prompt, get an image, move on. No chat, no relationship, no voice. Candy AI is the opposite — the relationship IS the product, images are a bonus. If you want to generate a hundred NSFW images, Promptchan. If you want to actually talk to someone (something?), Candy AI.

Against DreamGF — most similar competitor. Very close in features, similar quality. DreamGF might be slightly cheaper overall but Candy AI's chat quality and memory are better from what I tested. It's close enough that it comes down to which characters you like better.

Against CrushOn AI — simpler and cheaper but less multimodal. No real video, voice is basic, image quality isn't as good. If you just want uncensored text chat, CrushOn works fine for less money.

Against Character AI — much better chat AI honestly. Character AI is probably smarter at conversation. But it's censored. Can't do NSFW at all. So if that's what you're here for (and let's be real, it probably is) then Character AI isn't an option.

## Privacy & Safety

Account required. Email or Google or Discord login. No anonymous option which would have been nice.

They store your conversations. Their privacy policy says data is retained for "3 to 10 years" and can be subject to "human review" which is... not great. They say it's anonymized and de-identified but still. Some person at EverAI Limited could theoretically read your conversations. I'd keep the really personal stuff out of there if I were you.

HTTPS standard, Cloudflare protected. No confirmed end-to-end encryption on chats which multiple reviews have flagged. The billing is discreet through EverAI which is good. They accept crypto. The company is EverAI Limited — more transparent than most competitors in this space but still not exactly publishing annual reports.

Trustpilot sits at 3.6 out of 5 with about 150 reviews. The positive ones are genuinely positive — people who've used it for months or years and love the customization. The negative ones focus on the token system, memory loss in long conversations, and the cancellation policy. The company actually responds to Trustpilot reviews which is more than Promptchan does.

Candy AI is the best AI girlfriend app I've tested if you're looking at chat quality and customization combined. The character builder is deep, the conversations feel more real than anything else in this space, and the image generation is good. But the token system is predatory — there's no other word for it. They hook you with a cheap subscription then bleed you with tokens. The base product at thirteen bucks (or six if you go annual) is fair value. The all-in experience that they advertise, with daily images and voice calls and video — that's a fifty to a hundred dollar per month product and they should just price it that way instead of pretending it's twelve bucks. Still, if you budget your tokens and focus on the chat, it's genuinely good. Just don't go in thinking thirteen dollars is the real price.
